SIUE Day Chair, Theresa Schwartz, MD, MS, FACS

An SIUE double alumna, Dr. Theresa Schwartz earned a bachelor's in biological sciences with a specialization in medical science in 1999, and a master's in biological sciences in 2000. She joined the Saint Louis University School of Medicine as a physician and surgeon in 2011. As a result of her leadership efforts to create coordinated multidisciplinary care, the number of breast cancer diagnoses at the hospital has increased even-fold.

Dr. Schwartz's commitment to reduction disparities in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment benefits countless women outside the walls of the hospital. She has been a part of multiple research initiatives with the Ghana Collaborative Project to study differences in breast cancer tumor biology between women of different ethnicities. With the help of the Show Me Healthy Women program in Missouri, Dr. Schwartz supports women who are underinsured and uninsured to provide access to breast cancer and subsequent treatment.

"SIUE provided the educational foundation needed to successfully navigate the rigorous medical school curriculum," Schwartz said. "More importantly, SIUE helped me to be an organized and efficient lifelong learner."
