Madison County Board Chairman Kurt Prenzler calls the plan to renovate the county jail too expensive. Prenzler issued a statement on Tuesday ahead of the Madison County Board meeting tonight saying $14-million is too big of a price tag for taxpayers.
County officials have been trying to get a jail renovation plan passed for most of this decade, but since a 2012 petition drive forced the plan to a public vote...where it failed...the jail renovations have been locked in a budget debate. The original plan in 2012 was for a $19-million makeover of the aging building, but Prenzler believes an $8-million budget will take care of the pressing needs for the building. He said in the statement he is not against upgrading the building, but says it can be done at a lower cost. The Madison County Board Finance and Facilities committees have already signed off on the $14-million plan which will go before the full board at its meeting later today in Edwardsville.
