Fire crews from several departments were called out to a field fire in Alton on Wednesday afternoon. The dry and windy conditions presented a challenge to crews from Alton, Godfrey, East Alton and Fosterburg on the north side of Storey Lane not far from two mobile home parks and an apartment complex.
The call came in to the Alton Fire Department around 1:45pm Wednesday, and Alton called for assistance from Godfrey and Fosterburg who had brush trucks to deal with the terrain. East Alton also provided some equipment and manpower to surround the roughly 60 to 70 acres of harvested farm field and a few local farmers used tractors to help form a fire line. About 20 acres burned on Wednesday. In a previous interview with the Big Z, Godfrey Fire Protection District Chief Eric Kambarian said current dry conditions mean even those people who are not burning need to be careful:
