The entertainment district of Downtown Alton will look a little different by this weekend. The new owners of the building that once housed Tony’s Restaurant along Third, Piasa and Fourth Streets began demolition work on Wednesday, and more is planned today. Mac Lenhardt and Robert J. Sanders bought the property after Tony’s moved a few blocks north early in January 2020.
The initial demolition work on Wednesday included the back portion of Tony’s. A portion of 4th Street near the building will be closed at times today to make room for more demolition by Stutz Excavating. Once all the work is complete, most of the property will be covered by asphalt and made into parking for Mac’s Timeout. It will also open up additional space for deliveries to the bar and restaurant.
