dir="ltr" style="font-size: 12px;">Chicago is one of the final 20 cities being considered for Amazon’s second headquarters, but St. Louis is not. The online retail giant announced Thursday that the Second City has made it past its first weeding out of applicants that started with 238. Amazon says the winning bidder would see 50,000 new high-paying jobs and billions of dollars worth of investments.
Some surprises that were on the finalist list included Indianapolis and Columbus, Ohio. Others that were seen as front-runners were left off, including Detroit, San Diego, San Francisco and Phoenix. Gov. Bruce Rauner said Thursday that Illinois is perfect for Amazon.

Cities across the country offered billions of dollars in tax incentives in an effort to woo the company. Chicago reportedly offered the company more than $2 billion in incentives. Many have criticized giving incentives to one of the world’s most valuable companies, calling it corporate welfare.
