James Hazelwonder, 78, passed away at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2018.
He was born on October 6, 1936 in Michael, IL, the son of the late John and Mable (Shanks) Hazelwonder. He married Peggy Crull on September 15, 1956 at St. Michaels Church in Michael. She preceded him in death.Together they owned and operated Jim’s Package Liquor and Jim & Peg’s Carpet before retiring in 2011. A devoted NASCAR fan, he also enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family. He was a member St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fieldon and the Knights of Columbus.He is survived by a son, Jim (Laura) Hazelwonder of Hardin; three daughters, Cindy (Dave) Smith of Jerseyville, Patty (David) Clendenny of Eldred and Pam Newton of Carrollton; 9 grandchildren, Nick & Tyler Hazelwonder, Suzi (Adam) Gerson, Bret (Mandy) Sprong, Brad (Hilda) Sprong, Brent Sprong, PJ Clendenny, Lacie (Chris) Marienthal, and Dakota Newton; 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three siblings, Virginia Stumpf of Hardin, Cecilia Friedel of Jerseyville and Ed (Mary) Hazelwonder of Batchtown.In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Donny, John and Bill and three sisters, Betty, Eileen and Helen and one grandson, Benjamin Hazelwonder.Visitation 5 to 8 pm on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Gress, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Hardin.Funeral Service will be held at 10 am on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Gress, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Hardin with Fr. Don Roberts as celebrant.
