Charles Updike

Charles H. Updike, of Jerseyville, died September 17, 2018 at 1:47 p.m. at Jerseyville Manor.

He was born in Jerseyville on November 3, 1925 to Clarence Darlington and Edith (White) Updike. He was a Merchant Seaman Veteran serving in World War II. He married Rosemary Coleman on April 3, 1947 in Edwardsville.

He was the owner of Jerseyville Gas from 1946 to 1992. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Jerseyville. He served as Jerseyville Fire Chief from December 17, 1963 to April 1, 1995, and was a founding member of Westlake Country Club. He served as President for Illinois LP Gas Association in 1978, and served on the board for many years.

He is survived by a son, Charles R. "Chuck" (Debra) Updike of Jerseyville, three grandsons, Charles Steven (Melissa) Updike, Christopher Bradley (Lauren) Updike and Joshua Allen Updike, five great grandchildren, Alexis Jane, Tyler Charles, Gabriella Elizabeth, Andryn Lara and Kaden Everett.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, brother Clarence E. Updike, and sisters, Verna Favoright and Leah Little.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 21, 2018 at Alexander and Gubser Funeral Home from 4 - 8 p.m. Funeral will be Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Jerseyville, with Pastor Brent Meyer.

Military funeral rites by Jerseyville American Legion Post 495.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Jerseyville or Jersey County Relay for Life.
