Child & Teen Trauma Counselor

Alternatives Counseling has provided services to people of all ages since 1991. While we provide counseling to support a wide range of client struggles, we offer a particular focus for people who have experienced sexual or physical abuse, neglect, domestic violence, or other trauma victimization. This position is part of our joint venture with the Madison County Child Advocacy Center to support our children and youth within the surrounding communities.


This position requires a Master's degree in psychology, social work, or counseling, a minimum of two years of trauma-focused experience is preferredCandidates must be fully licensed or eligible for professional Illinois licensure (LCPC, LCSW, LMFT) within 6 months. The primary services provided in this position will be counseling to children, teens, and their families who are involved with the Madison County CAC, with services to be provided on-site. Children are typically interviewed at the CAC when there is suspected sexual abuse, severe physical harm, or when a child has witnessed a violent crime. Given these parameters, the ideal candidate has knowledge and experience in the treatment of sexual abuse, physical abuse, and trauma. Work at the CAC will include on-site crisis intervention and participation in multidisciplinary case staffings in addition to providing individual and family therapy. Weekly one-on-one clinical supervision will be provided for continual support of the clinician, along with group supervision with additional counselors to continue to expand knowledge and experienced-based skills. Counselors report directly to the clinical supervisor of Alternatives Counseling, Inc. and have ongoing collaborations with CAC staff and supervisors as needed. Additional service hours may take place at our Glen Carbon or Alton offices. Starting salary range is 44K to 54K annually depending on licensure, training, and experience with relevant populations. Scheduling is flexible around counselors’ and clients’ needs to help promote and support the balancing act of work-life, although some regular evening hours will be required to meet client needs.

· LCPC, LCSW, or LMFT license strongly preferred

· Master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or comparable field

· Experience working with children, teens, and families

· Training and experience with abuse and trauma treatment; TF-CBT

· A professional and personable presentation

· The ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

· Strong clinical verbal and written communication skills

· Cultural and linguistic competence for cross-cultural situations to best support community at large through cultural awareness, knowledge, and culturally appropriate clinical skills
