An Illinois State Police Trooper is hospitalized in serious but stable condition following a Wednesday night crash near Collinsville on I- 55/70. The incident began around 10:30pm when a vehicle left the roadway, hit a light pole, and that pole came crashing down onto the interstate.
The trooper was the third to have pulled up to the scene and is said to have been trying to direct traffic into the open lanes just before 11pm when he and his cruiser was hit by a tractor-trailer. The crash is the result of a Scott's Law violation, which requires drivers to change lanes (if safe to do so) or reduce speed and proceed with caution when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle displaying flashing warning lights. This is the 14th state police cruiser to be struck in Illinois in 2019.
