Southern Illinois Republican State Senator Darren Bailey has entered the race for Illinois Governor. Bailey announced his candidacy for the GOP nomination on Monday during an event in Effingham. Bailey is best known for publicly challenging the COVID-19 executive orders of Governor JB Pritzker in 2020 and vowed to work to reopen the economy and Illinois schools.
Bailey has been in the legislature since being elected in 2018 and calls himself a pro-life, pro-second amendment conservative who has fought against tax hikes, reckless spending, abortion access expansion and sanctuary state legislation. Bailey will hold additional campaign kickoff rallies this week in Highland, Marion, Bloomington, and in other towns around the state. The Republican primary is March 15, 2022.
