New rifles and vehicle equipment could be making its way to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department. At Monday’s County Board Public Safety Committee meeting, the budget was approved for nearly 90 rifles and new equipment on 19 vehicles, all to be used by the Sheriff’s Department and Madison County 911.

The proposed budget comes after Capt. Eric Decker discussed the departments plan to re-arm deputies because both handguns and rifles used by officers were more than a decade old and as he tells The Big Z, are having maintenance issues.

All of the purchases and spending resolutions must be approved by the full Madison County Board, which meets next Wednesday.
