The City of Wood River's new police station was dedicated Wednesday during a mid-morning ceremony that the chief says included fantastic weather. A thunderstorm came through early in the morning, but by the time the dedication ceremony came along, skies had cleared and the sun was shining.

Wood River Police Chief Brad Wells tells The Big Z it was especially appropriate to dedicate the building on this day.

Chief of Police Samuel Thompson was shot and killed in 1912 at the age of 54 while attempting to arrest a man. Village Marshal John Phipps succumbed to rabies in 1916 at the age of 58 after being bit by a rabid dog. Wells says the department moved in a couple of weeks ago and are getting used to the new, bigger building.
