The Jersey County Coroner has identified the victim found in a vehicle that crashed into Piasa Creek late Friday afternoon. Authorities say 67-year-old Betty Hicks was found inside the car that apparently ran into the creek along Beltrees Road.
The crash took place just after 3pm Friday, when the car ran off the road and into the water. Some estimates put the water level at between 15 and 20 feet in that area. Bystanders attempted to reach the car, but were unable to offer additional assistance. A dive team from Litchfield was eventually able to locate the submerged car and it was pulled from the water. Hicks was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy will be conducted to determine a cause of death.
