Selma Dickerson

Selma N. “Sally” Dickerson, 90, of Hillsboro, Missouri passed away at 6:20 p.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2018 at DeGraff Hospice House in Sappington, Missouri. 

She was born October 8, 1928 in Starkweather, North Dakota, a daughter of the late Peder and Anne (Andersen) Norstad. 

She married James Edward Dickerson on March 12, 1948 in Venice, Illinois and he passed away on April 9, 1998. She and her husband had lived in Collinsville for 21 years and in 1978 moved to their retirement home in Piedmont, Missouri and in 1998 moved back to the Hillsboro area. 

Sally was a dedicated and loving homemaker and a faithful member of the Hillsboro United Methodist Church. 

Throughout her life, she was very athletic and had a love for all sports. She enjoyed her days of playing golf, basketball, bowling, skiing or just being at the beach and she was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. As a mother of four boys, attending all of their sports events was a given. She also was a talented seamstress, helping to make many church banners and decorations, enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles and playing Pinochle and Railroad Rummy. She achieved her nickname, “Silly Sally” during her grade school days and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with her family and friends. 

She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, James W. and Karen Dickerson of Festus, Missouri, Robert E. and Joan Dickerson of Overland Park, Kansas, Thomas A. and Karen Dickerson of Pleasant Valley, Missouri and Ronald A. and Shelly Dickerson of Harvester, Alabama; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends. 

In addition to her parents and beloved husband of whom she shared 50 years of marriage prior to his passing, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Myrtle, Elly and Anna.

In celebration of her life, a memorial service will be held at Hillsboro United Methodist Church, 4810 Highway B, Hillsboro, Missouri at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 9, 2018 with Reverend Keith Vessell officiating. 

Memorial visitation will continue at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite City, Illinois from 4:00 p.m. until time of memorial service at 7:00 p.m. Private family burial will be at St. John Cemetery on Maryville Road in Granite City. 

Memorials may be made to Hillsboro United Methodist Church or to a charity of one’s choice.
