Anna Holmes

Bethalto 01/13/2021

Anna M. Holmes, 95, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, went to be with the Lord and reunited with her loving husband John L., at 8:21 pm Wednesday, January 13, 2021 with her family by her side.

She was born on March 8, 1925 in Witt, IL, the daughter of John and Anna (Stupak) Kisak.

Anna married John L. Holmes on December 11, 1948 in Witt, IL. He preceded her in death.

She was born the daughter of immigrant parents, living in a 3-room house with no running water, indoor plumbing or electricity. She lived through the Depression, major wars and most recently a pandemic. After losing her mother at an early age, she leaned on her faith through life's tough times to become a strong-willed person. She worked in a dress factory and the Glass Factory before becoming a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She was happiest playing Bingo, watching Wheel of Fortune, enjoying board games with her grandkids, and being a fan of UConn Women's Basketball. She also loved traveling, especially trips to Las Vegas.

She was a Charter member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto and instrumental in Our Lady Queen of Peace School. She always provided her time and talents to promote her faith. She was actively involved in OLQP School activities, Girl Scouts and the Smorgasbord.

She is survived by her children and spouses, Susan Holmes-Roper of Bethalto and Michael and Martina Holmes of Godfrey; 6 grandchildren, Anna Roper, Emily Holmes (Fiancé, Zachary Ross), Rachel Holmes and Johnathan, Franklin, and Catherine Matheny; several great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary (Kisak) Lowe, 3 brothers, John Kisak, Mike Kisak, Stephen Kisak; and a daughter, Cynthia (Holmes) Evans.

Visitation will be held Monday, January 18, 2021 from 10:30 am on until Mass at 11:30 am at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

Memorials can be made to Masses or Our Lady Queen of Peace School.
