“The Blues in Black and White: The Photography of Kirk West” Traveling Exhibition Opens November 4, 2017 at the National Blues Museum

Curator, Kirk West, to Give Free Gallery Talk at 12 pm

St. Louis, Mo – October 31, 2017: The National Blues Museum today announced its next traveling exhibition, “The Blues in Black and White: The Photography of Kirk West” presented by curators, Kirk and Kirsten West. The collection features black and white photographs of blues artists such as Albert King, Albert Collins, Son Seals, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Willie Dixon, Big Mama Thornton, the Allman Brothers Band, Koko Taylor and more.

To coincide with the exhibit’s November 4th opening, curator, Kirk West, will give a free Curator’s Talk from 12 pm to 1 pm in the museum’s Scott and Diane McCuaig and Family Gallery, followed by a book signing. The talk will be moderated by Jacqueline K. Dace, Director of Internal Affairs with the National Blues Museum.

“These photographs are real and raw; they are not staged and they capture the essence of the blues artist whether they are performing or relaxing after a show,” says Dion Brown, Executive Director of the National Blues Museum.

Kirk West, is a professional photographer who has an extensive collection of photographs of blues icons. Most of these photographs were taken in Chicago where Kirk was a contract photographer with the Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times. For many years, West worked with Bruce Iglauer, the founder of Alligator Records. Kirk left his home in Iowa and moved to Chicago because of his love of the blues and his desire to be closer to the source.

“The way that these images are portrayed in black and white, they allow the viewer to fully see the subjects. By removing the color, the stark contrast allows your eyes to be directed to the facial expressions and emotions of the moment,” says Jacqueline K. Dace, Director of Internal Affairs with the National Blues Museum.

Kirk West will sign copies of his newly released book The Blues in Black & White: The Photography of Kirk West, immediately following the gallery talk on February 4, 2017. This is a 200-page, hardcover, coffee table book, containing 200 images.

This traveling exhibition is sponsored in part by Edward Jones and the Scott and Diane McCuaig Family.
