The Madison County State's Attorney has brought charges against an Alton Middle School teacher for alleged sex crimes that happened about 20 years ago. 51-year-old William C. Ingersoll, of the 700 block of Linden Street in Alton, is charged with single counts of Criminal Sexual Assault and Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse.
The investigation began when a former student, upon hearing of a teacher being charged with sex crimes, contacted a trusted former high school teacher about alleged sexual contact between 1998 and 2000. The statute of limitations on this type of alleged sex crime is 20 years from the time the alleged victim turns 18. The teacher alerted the school district, which alerted the Alton Police Department, which made the arrest Wednesday morning. According to information from the Alton Police Department, the investigation spanned a number of states over the course of several months. No other students are believed to have been targeted, but the department asks if any other victims exist, to contact police.
