Get ready for traffic headaches this weekend. The Illinois Department of Transportation is closing Interstate 55/64 in East St. Louis from 8pm this (Friday) evening until 5pm Sunday in order to demolish a section of the Martin Luther King approach structure that carries traffic over westbound 55/64 as part of a massive bridge maintenance project that will see the MLK bridge out of service for at least a year.
The options to get into downtown St. Louis include the poplar Street Bridge, which is also undergoing renovations, and multiple lane closures will have that span down to just two lanes in either direction this weekend. IDOT Supervising Field Engineer Joel Cumby tells The Big Z they hope the timing of this closure will cause as little disruption as possible.

Unimpeded by construction are the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge north of downtown St. Louis, the Eads Bridge, the McKinley Bridge, I-270 into North County, or I-255 into South County.
