In 2018 Illinois ranked second in the nation in grade crossing fatalities and fifth in the nation in trespassing fatalities. Therefore, the Illinois State Police, District 18 are teaming up with the state, and federal agencies to promote Rail Safety week, September 22nd through the 28th.
This week will be an effort to promote railroad safety for pedestrians and vehicles so that less accidents will occur. Extra enforcement will take place for those who disobey the laws associated with railroad grade crossings, and railroad property. Along with officers passing out literature to the public with information about rail safety. The Illinois State Police ask for the public to obey the law when crossing railroad tracks, and to never try to drive or pass the protective gates when the warning lights or bells go off.
