Following a 19 hour standoff, the suspect in the fatal shooting of a police officer in west central Illinois last night is in custody. 39 year old Fulton County Sheriff's Deputy Troy Chisum was allegedly shot by the suspect who then barricaded himself in a residence in the town of Avon, located about 50 miles west of Peoria.
Deputy Chisum was a 4 and a half year veteran of the department and before that was a paramedic with the Fulton County EMA and a member of the West Central Response Team and ILEAS Team Region 6. He had responded last night to a battery and disturbance call when he was fatally wounded by gunfire. Multiple police agencies from the region responded to the scene and took 42 year old Nathan Woodring of Avon into custody earlier this morning without incident. Woodring was transported to the McDonough County Jail pending the filing of formal charges.
