The Riverbend appears to have dodged the worst of the severe weather from overnight, but we got what we did not need...more rain. Heavy rain fell again here and to the north, but there are few reports of any serious storm damage after tornado warnings overnight for southwestern Illinois. Authorities say portions of Jefferson City, Missouri, suffered very serious damage in a tornado just before midnight.
Missouri Governor Mike Parsons says 20 people are hospitalized with injuries but no fatalities have been reported. First responders in Jefferson City have been going door to door to check on residents some who called for help earlier this morning saying they were trapped. Highways 50 and 54 through Jeff City have been reopened but some side streets are still littered with debris. All Missouri state employees are being told to stay home today as some state buildings have sustained damage.
The storm that hit Jeff City began just north of the Lake of the Ozarks and also hit the town of Eldon, where several homes were damaged by what is believed to have been a tornado.
A separate tornado struck north of Joplin, Missouri, last night, killing 3 people. It happened on the 8 year anniversary of a massive tornado that killed 161 people back in 2011.
