Two traveling fraudsters pleaded guilty this week to crimes committed in the Metro East region. 47-year-old Elvin Lugo-Cales of Orlando, Florida and 30-year-old Johnny Collado of the Bronx, New York both plead guilty to multiple federal charges including conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, and aggravated identity theft.
According to court documents, Lugo-Cales and Collado traveled from New York to the St. Louis region last March for the sole purpose of defrauding banks.
The pair attempted to cash a counterfeit check at the US Bank location in Edwardsville for $3,650 using a fake passport for identification. The men were caught and stopped by police shortly after. When stopped the men possessed over $20,000 in cash. The two men will be sentenced at the federal courthouse in Benton, Illinois in April. Both men face up to 30 years in prison and fines up to $1-million each.
