Temperatures will remain well below freezing for the day today, so there will be little in the way of melting of the ice and snow that fell on Monday. Road crews are monitoring conditions which are much improved from 12 hours ago but are still slick in spots, especially on bridges, overpasses and on and off ramps.
Local, county and state crews spent much of the Veterans Day holiday salting and then scraping roads around the Riverbend. The hills and bricks streets in Alton were especially challenging at times, and there was blowing snow in the more open areas between the Riverbend and Edwardsville and in parts of Jersey and Macoupin County. If you must travel today authorities say give yourself extra time to get to your destination, slow down and stay off your phone, watch out for black ice and give road crews extra room to work.
