A Wood River woman is now charged in the death of her mother-in-law. 47-year-old Amy L. Melchert has been charged with two counts of First-Degree Murder and one count of Drug Induced Homicide, for allegedly delivering a fatal dose of morphine to 86-year-old Wilma J. Melchert earlier this year. Amy Melchert was a registered nurse responsible for her care.
At about 5:46pm on June 12, Wood River Police responded to a death investigation at a home in the 500 block of East Ferguson Avenue. Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons tells The Big Z Wilma Melchert had just been placed on hospice care.
Following an autopsy and toxicology screening, Wilma Melchert’s death was ruled a homicide from an overdose of Morphine. Gibbons says that although assisted suicide is not legal in Illinois, they considered that possibility.
