Virgie Curvey

Virgie O. Curvey, age 77, of Alton, passed away Friday, January 12, 2018, at her home surrounded by her family.She was born October 9, 1940, in Prescott, AR, the daughter of Orla and Alice (Elmore) Schafer. She married Perry Curvey in 1961, and he survives.Virgie grew up learning to survive with very little. This resulted in a remarkable woman with a serious work ethic and love of life. She was not allowed to attend school past sixth grade, yet once married, she attended night classes until she earned her high school diploma. Virgie was well known for her hobbies. These included miniature doll houses, crocheting, cross stitching, and scrapbooking. Virgie displayed her crafts at many shows and often won awards.In addition to her husband, Perry; she is survived by two sons and their wives, Vernon and JoAnne Curvey of Godfrey, and Ricky and Jean Curvey of Alton; two brothers, Melvin and Elvin Schafer; four grandchildren, Rachel and Riley Kuithe, and Joshua, Austin, and Mary Curvey; one great-grandchild, Piper Kuithe; and a favored niece, Vivian Seago of Texas.She is preceded in death by her parents; and three sisters, Alice, Catherine, and Zelda.Visitation will be held Saturday, January 20, 2018, from 10:00 am until the time of a Celebration of Life at 11:00 am at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton with Pastor Charles West officiating.A private family burial will take place in Upper Alton Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to BJC Hospice of Illinois.Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.Online Condolences may be made at www.eliaskallalandschaaf.com
