
David Sherwood Hart passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2017 surrounded by his loving family after a courageous 2 year battle with cancer.
Dave was born on July 12, 1940, the son of William Bruce Hart and Adele Sophia Hanfelder Hart in Granite City, IL. He was baptized and confirmed at St John Evangelical & Reformed Church in Wood River, Il.
He attended Franklin Grade School in Hartford, Bohm School in Edwardsville (a one room school of fourth, fifth & sixth grades) and Edwardsville Jr. High. He played basketball for the Edwardsville High School Tigers coached by Joe Lucco and graduated in the EHS Class of 1958. He attended Eastern Illinois University where he played basketball for the Panthers and was a member of Sigma Pi fraternity. He served in the United States Army Reserves and was honorably discharged in 1968. Dave was employed by Illinois Lumber and in 1974 became co-owner/ President of Troy Building Supply in Troy, IL. Later he was employed by Mechanics Planing Mill in Glen Carbon.
Dave married Donna Mae Brockmeier (who survives) on June 26, 1965 at Eden United Church of Christ in Edwardsville and they were blessed to celebrate 52 years of marriage. They are the parents of two wonderful and loving children: Amy Hart Hosto (Chris) of Hamel, IL and David Randall “Randy” Hart (Tina) of Tucson, AZ. His children were very special to him as were his grandchildren: Lauren, Gavin and Emma Hosto of Hamel and Lacy Mae Hart of Tucson. He treasured being a part of the daily lives of the Hosto grandchildren and was always ready to fly to Tucson to see Lacey.
Dave was a past member of the Edwardsville Jaycees, a member of Eden Church and Sunset Hills Country Club. Dave, AKA “Dr. Golf,” enjoyed golfing with a couples golf group of 25+ years, playing games with his grandchildren, and playing cards with the “boys” who were 50+ year friends. He was a creative chef in the kitchen and was known for his homemade soups in large quantities which he loved to share with friends. He was an avid St Louis Cardinals fan, loved to read and to listen to the Route 66 program on KMOX. He was a tall man with a great smile and a humorous comment or story that would bring a smile from others. He loved to be encouraged to tell a story or joke and would readily perform for the group.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Bonnie Hart Hanks and her husband Andrew Hanks. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his nephews Robert Hanks (Julie) and Edward Hanks (Darlene), niece Nancy Hanks, and sister-in-law Barbara Brockmeier Haberer (Roger).
He will be sadly missed. Friends are invited to join the family to celebrate his life, to cherish the memories and to comfort one another.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 28th, from 3 pm to 7 pm at Eden Church, Edwardsville. The funeral service will be on Thursday, June 29th, at 10:30 am at Eden Church followed by a luncheon in the fellowship hall.
Memorials made in memory of Dave may be given to Hospice of Southern Illinois or Praise Community Church Fellowship or Eden Church in lieu of flowers.
