The Metro East Lutheran runner said the result reflected his work and what it meant to reach the finals on the state stage.

“It means a lot that my hard work has paid off," he said. "It also means a lot to run on this track at Charleston and do the same thing as others I know before me to make the finals,” Shank said.

Shank said his goal had been to run 4:26 and that advancing in fourth place was especially meaningful.

“I was aiming for a 4:26 time in the 1,600, but I didn't get there the way I thought I would, but I did," he said excitedly. “The finals placement in the 1,600 is a big deal. It was fun watching everyone else run before me and seeing that I can do this.”

Earlier this season, Shank posted a time of 10:20.9 in the 3,200 meters at a meet on April 7, 2026, against Staunton, Litchfield, Pana, and Southwestern.
