Charges Filed After Burglary, Vandalism Reported At Metro East Lutheran

EDWARDSVILLE – A local man accused of causing extensive property damage and stealing items from the Metro East Lutheran High School locker rooms faces felonies in two Madison County cases.

Trey A. Stone, 27, listed as homeless out of Granite City, was charged on Aug. 20, 2026 with a Class 1 felony coutn of burglary, two Class 2 felony counts of institutional vandalism, a Class 2 felony count of criminal damage to property and a Class 2 felony count of theft.

Stone allegedly knowingly entered Metro East Lutheran High School in Edwardsville with the intent to commit a felony on July 20, 2026. Stone also reportedly caused over $10,000 in damage to property inside the school, including doors, locks, drywall, vending machines, lockers, sports equipment and medical equipment. He is also accused of stealing over $500 worth of various other property from the school on the same date.

The Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to deny Stone’s pretrial release from custody. While not charged with a “detainable” offense in this case, prosecutors requested that Stone be detained given several recent failures to appear in court for other pending criminal charges.

“Video footage provided to the Edwardsville Police Department by Metro-East Lutheran High School confirms that on or about July 20, 2026, during the day and while certain personnel and faculty were present, Defendant ran through the school cafeteria shirtless with an AED defibrillator device, and then attempted to open a vending machine,” the petition states. “Defendant then ran toward the gymnasium, and entered both the boys’ and girls’ locker rooms.”

The petition cites photographic evidence which reportedly shows the damage Stone caused to the ceiling and drywall of the locker rooms, where multiple items were either stolen or vandalized. Some of the items were later recovered from a dugout on July 21, 2026.

“Video footage further confirms that Defendant returned to the cafeteria with a yellow towel or blanket, a pole, a fire extinguisher and a cross-body bag,” the petition states. “The same footage confirms that Defendant smashed the glass on one of the vending machines and then took several items from said vending machine.”

Stone was then reportedly seen on video exiting the building before mounting “a bicycle with a small trailer attached,” the petition states. Authorities believe the small trailer was loaded with personal property stolen from the school’s locker room.

The Edwardsville Police Department presented this case against Stone, who was remanded to jail for his initial court appearance in this case.

Stone was also charged in a separate case filed two days prior on Aug. 18, 2026 with one count each of residential burglary (a Class 1 felony) and theft (a Class 3 felony).

On June 27, 2026, Stone allegedly knowingly entered another person’s Granite City residence without authority and stole over $500 worth of items from the same property owner. Charging documents list the stolen items as being a television, certain tools and a Canik TP9 handgun.

A petition was also filed in this case to deny Stone’s pretrial release from custody. The petition states Stone’s multiple prior failures to appear in court indicate a high likelihood he would flee to avoid prosecution if released from custody.

“Among other things, Defendant is alleged to have stolen a handgun during the commission of the alleged residential burglary,” the petition states. “Defendant is currently on pretrial release in other matters, and a condition of that release is that Defendant must not have possession of my firearms. Defendant clearly violated that condition by allegedly stealing a firearm in a particularly egregious way – though burglarizing a residence.”

The residential burglary case against Stone was presented to prosecutors by the Granite City Police Department.

All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
