EDWARDSVILLE — Madison County has reported 58 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite, as Illinois recorded 995 confirmed and probable cases statewide as of 7 a.m. Aug. 4, 2026, according to the data provided.

The illness affects the stomach and causes diarrhea. Statewide, 58 hospitalizations have been reported, and no deaths have been reported. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, gas, cramping, bloating, nausea, weight loss, appetite loss and fatigue.
Of the 995 confirmed and probable cases in Illinois, 193 involved people who reported travel outside the United States, 631 were domestically acquired and 171 had unknown travel status.
Beyond Illinois, Michigan reported more than 12,200 cases as of Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026. Missouri reported 1,095 cases as of Wednesday.
In a Tuesday update, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it had recorded 10,468 laboratory-confirmed cases of domestically acquired cyclosporiasis, with infections reported in 47 states.
Another 12,255 cases had not yet been laboratory-confirmed or fully investigated.
