VENICE - Illinois State Police special agents have arrested an 18-year-old Missouri man on two counts of first-degree murder after a fatal shooting in Venice, Illinois, authorities said on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

Jason A. McCallum of Florissant, Mo., was charged in connection with the death of 38-year-old Travion Sherrod of Madison, IL., who was found with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle in the 1200 block of Selb Street of Venice. After what state police described as a thorough investigation, special agents identified McCallum as a suspect. He was taken into custody on May 30, 2026, after a flight at Lambert St. Louis International Airport with assistance from Lambert St. Louis Airport Police and the St. Louis County Police Department

The Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office filed the charges on June 1, 2026, and McCallum is being held in St. Louis County pending extradition to Illinois.

The Venice Police Department requested assistance from the Illinois State Police on May 26, 2026, in a homicide investigation on Selb Street, according to the ISP. Officers found Sherrod dead in the vehicle on the day of the crime on May 26.

Illinois State Police said the investigation is ongoing.

State police are asking witnesses or anyone with direct knowledge of the shooting to contact ISP at ISP.CRIMETIPS@illinois.gov. Tips can remain anonymous. No additional information was available, according to the release.
