EDWARDSVILLE - The Madison County Board unanimously approved the nomination of Nancy Werden to fill the vacancy in the office of Madison County Regional Superintendent of Schools on Wednesday, July 15, 2026. The vacancy was created by the retirement of Robert W. Werden, who recently completed 32 years of service in the field of education.

Nancy Werden was nominated by the Madison County Board Chairman, Chris Slusser after consultation with Thomas Haine and the Madison County State’s Attorney’s office. Mrs. Werden meets the statutory requirements for the position including being of the same political party as the outgoing Regional Superintendent, possessing the required state license, and holding all necessary degrees for the office of Regional Superintendent.
Nancy Werden has been an educator since 1994 and most recently served as the Superintendent for East Alton Elementary School District 13. She has served as a teacher, principal, curriculum coordinator, interim superintendent, and superintendent over her career. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology, a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, a Specialist Degree (Superintendent Certification) all from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and is currently completing her Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership. She recently won the Republican Primary in March and is running unopposed on the November ballot for the position of Madison County Regional Superintendent of Schools. Her goal is to serve the residents of Madison County with fairness, fiscal responsibility, and sincerity as she assists local school districts in maintaining the level of excellence for which Madison County schools have long been known.
