SPRINGFIELDState Senator Erica Harriss (56th-Glen Carbon) issued the following statement following the release of the Legislative Inspector General's report regarding former State Representative Harry Benton:

"The release of this report is an important step toward ensuring Illinoisans have the transparency they deserve from their state government. When allegations of misconduct involve elected officials, the public has every right to expect those matters will be investigated thoroughly and handled with integrity.

"Transparency, however, is only part of the solution. We should use this report as an opportunity to strengthen Illinois' ethics laws, improve accountability, and ensure the public can have confidence in the processes designed to hold elected officials accountable.

"For too long, meaningful ethics reforms have stalled while public trust in state government has suffered. This report should serve as a reminder that restoring trust requires action. Illinoisans deserve a government that is committed to the highest ethical standards, and lawmakers should work together to make that expectation a reality."
