ZONING CLEAN-UP ASSISTANT

Department: Building and Zoning Reports To: Code Enforcement & Zoning Officer / Building and Zoning Director FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Employment Type: Full-Time Pay Rate: Starting at $18.00 per hour Hours: 40 hours per week (Monday–Friday, occasional weekends as needed) Benefits: Eligible for full-time benefits including paid time off, health insurance, and IMRF participation

POSITION SUMMARY

The Zoning Clean-Up Assistant is a full-time, field-based support position within the Village of Godfrey’s Building and Zoning Department. This position works closely with the Code Enforcement & Zoning Officer to assist in nuisance abatement and property maintenance efforts. The role involves hands-on clean-up work, use of basic landscaping equipment, and coordination with Village staff to improve compliance and the appearance of properties throughout the Village. This position is ideal for individuals with a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and pride in community appearance.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with clean-up and maintenance of properties cited for code or zoning violations.
  • Remove trash, brush, weeds, and debris from vacant lots, alleyways, and other nuisance locations.
  • Collect and properly dispose of illegally placed signs and banners from utility poles, fences, and public rights-of-way.
  • Perform weed trimming, minor landscaping, and general site beautification tasks.
  • Operate and maintain small equipment such as weed trimmers, blowers, mowers, and hand tools.
  • Load and unload materials and debris into Village vehicles and assist with disposal at authorized sites.
  • Assist in documenting clean-up efforts with basic notes and site photos as directed.
  • Keep accurate logs of time, materials used, and work locations.
  • Maintain Village equipment in clean and operable condition; report any issues to supervisors.
  • Follow all safety procedures and wear required protective gear while in the field.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
  • Experience in landscaping, public works, maintenance, or a related field preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Comfortable performing physical labor including lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Familiarity with use and care of hand tools, lawn maintenance equipment, and power tools.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and complete tasks independently.
  • Dependable, punctual, and team-oriented.
  • Basic recordkeeping and communication skills for daily reporting.
  • Strong sense of responsibility and commitment to community improvement.
