About this event

Lewis and Clark Community College is getting into the holiday spirit and inviting the public to come “Hiking Through the Holidays” on the Godfrey Campus this year.

The one-quarter mile lighted trail begins behind the Andy Simpson Tennis Complex and runs along the back of campus. It will be open to the public from 5-9 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, Dec. 2-23.

“You’re going to be amazed,” said Debbie Witsken, president of the Lewis and Clark Faculty Association. “It’s very exciting to see what the team has accomplished, and we can’t wait to share it with the larger community.”

Visitors will enter the trailhead through the tennis pavilion and follow the lights and signage, though maps will also be available. The trail is free for all guests, and free parking is located nearby, behind the McPike Math & Science Complex.

One of the trail’s features, Christmas Tree Lane, boasts a grove of 6-foot wooden trees decorated by various departments and organizations across campus.

From 6-8 p.m. on special nights – Dec. 10, 17 & 23 – guests will have the opportunity to meet and have photos taken with L&C’s mascot, Blazer the Newfie.

Hiking Through the Holidays is a campus and community event developed by Lewis and Clark’s strategic efforts to build and support a transparent and inclusive campus culture, and to build community partnerships throughout the district (Key Directions 3 & 4 of L&C's Strategic Plan).

Cody Zippmann, Key Direction 3 Co-Leader (along with Witsken) and Campus Logistics Supervisor, originally came up with the idea, and others on campus jumped at the chance to help create something special.

“This whole thing came together as a team effort, and I can’t thank everyone enough for participating,” Zippmann said. “We hope the community will come out and share in the joy of the holiday season with us.”

Due to uneven terrain, the trail is not wheelchair accessible. Visitors are advised to wear sturdy footwear and use caution on the path.

Should the trail be closed for inclement weather any time during the season, updates will be posted to the college’s Facebook page and website at www.lc.edu/hiking.
