ABOUT PKD:

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is one of the most common, life-threatening genetic kidney diseases. PKD causes uncontrolled growth of fluid-filled cysts in both kidneys, often leading to kidney failure. Once a person has kidney failure, transplant or dialysis are the only options to treat the damage the disease has caused. PKD patients are in urgent need of treatments and a cure.

There are two types of Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD): autosomal dominant PKD (ADPKD) and autosomal recessive PKD (ARPKD).

1. ADPKD is more common and affects an estimated 600,000 Americans and 12.4 million people worldwide. Parents with ADPKD have a 50 percent chance of passing it on to each of their children. Approximately 10 percent of the people diagnosed with ADPKD have no family history of the disease, with PKD developing as a spontaneous (new) mutation. Once they have it, they have a 50 percent chance of passing it on to each of their children.

2. The less common and rare form, ARPKD affects approximately 1 in 25,000 children WORLDWIDE. While ARPKD can causes death in the first month of life, almost 80% of ARPKD children survive the newborn period. One-third of those who survive will need dialysis or transplantation by the age 10.
