The last time Alton hosted a high-end baseball team, the Bluff City Bombers played minor-league ball at Gordon Moore Park’s Lloyd Hopkins Field. Their 6-year stay ended in 2004, but now it looks like a new league may place an expansion team in Alton.
The Prospect League is a summer collegiate wood bat league, and talks are in the works with potential ownership. Alton Parks and Recreation Director Mike Haynes tells The Big Z Hopkins field’s turf is in pretty good shape, but some improvements would be necessary.

If all parties can come to an agreement, play would begin in 2021. The Prospect League is a collegiate summer baseball league comprising teams of college players from North America and beyond. All players in the league must have NCAA eligibility remaining in order to participate. Players are not paid so as to maintain their college eligibility.
