The McDonald's on Broadway at Ridge Street in Alton was destroyed by a fire on Thursday. No one was injured and the cause remains under investigation. The fire broke out around 5:00am near the rear of the store, which was closed at the time, and quickly spread into the rest of the building.The scene remained active for several hours, with local street closures impacting traffic along Broadway and Ridge Streets. Alton Fire Chief Jesse Jemison tells The Big Z they were on the roof when the air conditioner fell in about a foot-and-a-half, at which time firefighters were pulled out of the building and off of the roof:

Firefighters and equipment from Godfrey, East Alton, and Florissant (MO) also responded to the scene. Business owner Dick Bold says he plans to rebuild.
