As renovations at the Madison County Jail progress, there is a deal in place that answers the question where to put some of the prisoners. The county's renovation is happening one cellblock at a time, and the Alton Police Department is finalizing a deal that would eventually bring 30-35 inmates at a time to the Alton jail.

The city will make about $350-400,000 off of this contract over the course of four years, according to Simmons. Two additional jailers would be hired, and the expectation is that the positions would be eliminated through attrition at the end of the contract.
