If you travel Brown Street from Upper Alton to the west, you’ve had to find a different route over the last week or so. A resurfacing project is wrapping up that began a couple of weeks ago, and the road from Washington Avenue to Mills Street is now open.
Alton Public Works Department Director Bob Barnhart tells The Big Z the project involved milling down about an inch-and-a-half of the existing surface and laying down new asphalt.

All that remains to be done is striping the pavement. In other city council business, the resolutions continuing the work on the Safe Routes to School project were passed. That initiative will create new sidewalks connecting portions of College Avenue, Rock Spring Drive, and other nearby streets. And the resolution calling for the sale of the property on Golf Road intended for a new hotel/restaurant was tabled as Alderman Velloff has requested more information on the proposal.
