A Granite City man is facing charges in connection with a carjacking in Glen Carbon back in March. 59 year old Tony Turner was one of two suspects involved in the incident that began at the Sam's location and ended when the other suspect fled in a stolen vehicle and got into a fatal shootout with police along Interstate 55.
Authorities say Turner and the other suspect were breaking into the jewelry counter at Sam's when an alarm went off. The men fled the scene, with Turner fleeing in a red four-door vehicle while the other suspect carjacked another victim. Police got a license plate number from Turner's vehicle and help from witnesses in identifying him. He was arrested at his home in Granite City on Tuesday and formally charged on Wednesday in Madison County Court with aggravated vehicular hijacking, attempted aggravated vehicular hijacking, attempted vehicular hijacking, burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary. He is being held on a $750,000 bond. The other suspect in the case, 53 year old Billy Walker of Hillsboro, Missouri, fled the scene by firing a gunshot at a witness, stealing a car at gunpoint from a victim at the nearby PetSmart location, then driving at a high rate of speed on I-55 north into Macoupin County where his car crashed. Walker fled on foot firing gunshots at an Illinois State Police Trooper who returned fire, killing the suspect.
