Unless another 25 deaths in Madison County are attributed to overdoses between now and the end of the year, this year’s total will fall well short of last year’s record of 109. So far, 89 overdose deaths have been logged in the county. Still way too many, according to the Madison County Coroner.

But with the small decline in opioid-related deaths comes an uptick in methamphetamine overdoses. That is a return to the trend that was prevalent before the heroin scourge hit the area about a decade ago.
