Former Sears to Become Movie TheaterT are plans in place for a new movie theater to locate in Alton.  The owners of Alton Square Mall made the announcement this afternoon at an event at the shopping center, saying the theater operated by NCG Cinemas will open in the former Sears location this summer.  Remodeling of the building is already underway.

The last time a movie theater operated in Alton was 1998, but if all goes according to plan, movies will be shown at a new theater at Alton Square Mall by this summer. Hull Property Group has confirmed the 8-screen theater will be built inside the former Sears department store. Hull’s Rob Johnson is in charge of construction.

A new theater was planned for the mall under previous management, but it never materialized. Hull officials have said they hoped to make an announcement with a movie chain as part of a long-term redevelopment of the shopping center. That work has already lead to remodeling inside the mall, new signage, and the demolition of the former Macy’s building.
