A St. Louis man accused of setting fire to a church in Dow last summer has pleaded guilty in Jersey County Court. 22-year-old Deahvion Bishop entered the plea to a count of arson at a place of worship. He will be sentenced on November 2.
The main sanctuary of the Dow Southern Baptist Church on Dow Road only suffered smoke damage but there was heavy damage to the church office and classroom areas which collapsed into the church basement. Emergency crews were called out around 2am to a fire alarm at the nearby AT&T building and when police arrived discovered the fire at the church. The QEM Fire Protection District arrived first, with help from fire crews in Jerseyville, Godfrey, Brighton, Fieldon and Carrollton. Charges of criminal damage to property and burglary were dropped in the case.
