With less than a week left on the job, the Alton Police Chief is commenting on the current climate in America as it relates to policing. Jake Simmons officially retires on September 30, and current Deputy Chief Marcos Pulido becomes Chief the following day.

With a number of high-profile incidents sparking protests and, in some cases, rioting in recent years, Simmons tells The Big Z it’s a challenging time to wear the badge.

He says de-escalation skills should be developed in coming years, as policing involves dealing more with homeless, crisis, and mental health issues as a result of budget cuts at the state level.
