A Madison County judge has sentenced a Troy man to what basically adds up to a life sentence in the death of a woman from Worden. 56-year-old Brian France was convicted in October of three counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, one count of criminal sexual assault, unlawful restraint and involuntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to 78-years in prison on Monday.
Authorities had accused France of sexually assaulting and restraining 38-year-old Brandi Novotny in his truck in June 2018. Investigators testified that Novotny was under the influence of drugs at the time of her death, but she died of positional asphyxiation while she was lying on the floorboard of France’s truck after he had sexually assaulted her. Circuit Judge Kyle Napp sentenced him to 20 years per count on the aggravated criminal sexual assault, 10 years on the criminal sexual assault, 3 years on unlawful restraint, and 5 years involuntary manslaughter.
