The Illinois Commerce Commission has announced an extension for some residents who were facing utility disconnection. In response to a request by the ICC, several companies have now extended the moratorium on disconnections through March 31, 2021 for those lower income residents who are eligible for state energy assistance, including Ameren Illinois and Illinois American Water.
Previous deadlines were set to run out this month, but the ICC says in light of the ongoing financial challenges due to COVID-19, the utilities have voluntarily extended the disconnection moratorium beyond the previous September 30 deadline for those who would be eligible for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP. The ICC urges customers of any utility to contact their service provider if they are having trouble paying a bill to set up a payment plan or see if they qualify for assistance.
