Elizabeth Stahlhut

Alton 01/17/2019

Elizabeth M. Stahlhut, 95, formerly of Alton and Holiday Shores, died Thursday, January 17, 2019 while residing at Robings Manor, Brighton, Illinois.

She was born on July 8, 1923 to Walter and Velma Miller. She married Vernon R. Stahlhut on December 28, 1950 at the former Evangelical and Reformed Church, 8th and Henry Streets, with the Rev. O. W. Heggemeier officiating. A son, David, was born to this union. Elizabeth and Vernon remained active members of that congregation for many years.

Elizabeth was a 'Pink Lady' at Alton Memorial Hospital, where she pushed many patients back and forth to Radiology. Later, she was employed by the former Peavey Barge Line (now Con Agra) at their Alton office, which was located in the Millers Mutual building. She told many stories about her beloved 'guys' on the Peavey towboats, always watched for the blue-covered barges and was very proud each time Peavey bought a new towboat.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and grandson Matthew David Stahlhut.

She is survived by her son David (Kathleen) of Godfrey; grandchildren Christina Dolan-Derks (Carl) of Spokane, Washington, David Patrick (Stephanie) Stahlhut of Liberty, Missouri, Stephanie (Charlie) Shellito of Gladstone, Missouri, Brian (Andrea) Stahlhut of Alton, and Jennifer (Caleb) Krotz of Jerseyville; a great-grandson Daniel Dolan-Derks of Spokane, Washington, and great-granddaughters Rosalie Elizabeth Shellito of Gladstone, Missouri and Aurora Jane Stahlhut of Liberty, Missouri. Her grandchildren have many cherished memories of 'Grandma mac and cheese,' 'Grandma chili,' and 'Grandma salad in the walnut bowl,' as well as 'don't get Grandma's hair wet' while swimming in the lake at Holiday Shores.

Visitation will be Monday, January 21, 2019 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf, Alton location, from 5 PM to 9 PM, with a prayer service at 5 PM. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 22, 2019, 10 AM, at Chapel of the Cross-Lutheran, 11645 Benham Road, St. Louis, Missouri. Burial will follow at Upper Alton Cemetery.

A special thanks to her primary care givers: Dr. Manju Ramchandani, Heather, Sharon, Sheila, Jody, and Kimberly, to whom the family is greatly indebted.
