Patricia Ann (Metzger) Maher entered into the joy of heaven at 6:02 pm on Sunday, July 14, 2019. She died, strengthened by the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church and surrounded by her family, at the Mother of Good Counsel Home in St. Louis, Missouri. She was born on March 12, 1930, in Pittsburg, Kansas, to Wilbert V. and Margaret (Herren) Metzger, the youngest of three children. The family returned to Alton, where she attended St. Mary's Grade School and Marquette High School, graduating in 1948. She then worked at Catholic Charities and at Riley Brothers Chevrolet as a bookkeeper until her marriage on Jan. 8, 1955, to Daniel J. Maher. He preceded her in death on April 2, 1995. In 1977, she began working with the Alton School District, retiring from the School Board office in March, 1995. After her retirement, she was an active volunteer with the Hayner Library 'Friends of the Library'.
She is survived by a daughter, Martha (Sr. M. Anastasia) of Alton; four sons: Daniel P., Godfrey, Thomas J., Godfrey, Christopher J., Indianapolis, and Matthew J. (Cheryl), Alton; five grandchildren: Daniel, Natalee, Gracie, Nathan and Benjamin; a brother, Donald Metzger, St. Louis, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sister, Maureen (Metzger) Pars.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 17, 2019 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, July 18, 2019 at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton with Fr. Jeremy Paulin OMV officiating.
Burial will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery in Alton.
