Raymond Zimmerman

Raymond J. Zimmerman, 100, died at 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at Alton Memorial Rehab Therapy Center.  He was born February 7, 1920 in Milford, IN the son of the late Earnest and Ruth (Peffley) Zimmerman. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII.  He was awarded the Normandy Jubilee of Liberty Medal by the French government for his role in helping free France from the Nazis. He was a member of the VFW Post 1308, American Legion of Alton and the Eagles Lodge.  Raymond was the owner of Alton and Contractors construction company for many years.  On January 28, 1942 in St. Charles, MO he married Nora Sticht and she preceded him in death on September 25, 2001. 

Surviving are one son, Stanley Zimmerman of Alton, three grandchildren, Travis, Todd and Gretchen Zimmerman and two great grandchildren.  Besides his wife he was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Baierlein, two brothers, Harley and Richard Zimmerman and two sisters, Frances Patchet and Mildred Yaeger.  Visitation will be Monday, October 26, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Gent Funeral Home in Alton.  Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, October 26, 2020 at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with full military honors from Alton VFW Post 1308. 

Reverend Randy Fischer will officiate.  Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society or Disabled American Veterans Association.   Additional information and online guest book may be found at www.gentfuneralhome.com
