Edith Maher

Edith Lillian Maher, 103, formerly of Brighton, went to be with the lord on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Hickory Estates of Greenville.

She was born on April 4, 1920, in Woodburn, to the late Charles and Katherine (Winsel) Blumstein.

Edith married William “Bill” Maher on October 31, 1944, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Brighton. He preceded her in death on April 20, 1989.

She worked at Owens Illinois Glass Works before she was married. She raised her children on the family farm and was a fabulous cook, making all her family’s’ wedding cakes. She loved to quilt, garden, and plant beautiful flowers in her yard.  Edith was a member the Kitchen Klatter Band, Altar Society, St Alphonsus Catholic Church, Choir, and the Neighborhood Birthday Club.  She was a loving mother who always put her family first and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Edith is survived by six children, Pat (Louis) Johnson of Shipman, Teresa Lahr (Jeff Minnie) of Brighton, William Timothy (Lisa) Maher of Brighton, Kathleen (Donald) Reed of Greenville, Regina (Steve) Bellitto of Medora, and Rita Scanlon of Brighton; eighteen grandchildren, Curt (Beth) Johnson, Devin (Kaysee) Johnson, Holly (J) Holmes, Matthew (Carolyn) Lahr, Marcus (Kelli) Lahr, Sara (Jason) Greenwell, Lara (Michael) Phillips, Lucas (Melissa) Lahr, David (Rheanna) Whitsell, Whitt Whitsell, Harmony Harris, Brandy Maher, Andrea (Gary) Reed-Ranek, Erin (Bob) Mihelich, Nathan (Casey) Reed, Vincent Bellitto, Andrew Bellitto, and Brittany Scanlon (Matt Liesen); 29 great grandchildren, Morgan and Andrew Johnson, Kirsten, Jacy, and Jillian Holmes, Reed, Cora, and Katherine Mihelich, Owen and Willa Stotts, Dorian Reed-Ranek, Jack and Theodore Reed, Brett (Allison), Grant, and Gunner Greenwell, Katrina and Martina Lahr, Leander, Koen, Josie, and Rory Lahr, Cara, Hana, and Maya Phillips, Bella, Dakota, and Shieanne Harris; two step great grandchildren, Charles (Krysten) and Kimberly Lovatto; three great grandchildren Conner and Bryce Greenwell, Grayson Lahr, and a fourth due this year. Step great great grandchildren Landon and Luka; sister in law Fern Blumstein of Brighton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Katherine; husband, Bill; grandson Craig Alan Johnson; sisters, Emma, Myrtle, Nell, Elsie, and Cleta; brothers Carl, Russ, and Warren; brother in law Levi Maher.

Visitation will be held from 10 am until Funeral Mass at Noon on Friday, January 26, 2024, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Brighton.

Burial will follow at St. Denis Cemetery in Shipman.

Memorials may be made to Bond County Hospice, St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, St. Lawrence Catholic Church, or Alzheimer’s Association.
